  • Best build made of 1680-denier ballistic nylon.
  • A zip-away suspension system with hip-belt
  • High-clearance suspension

best backpack with wheels 2019 Osprey Sojourn 80LDrawbacks but not deal breakers:

  • Bulky in size: We expected it to be a little smaller as there are other options on the market that are of the same capacity but smaller in size. Then again the tradeoff of being small and holding so much is the organization that is the best in the sojourn only because of the larger size. It’s an 80L what do you expect?
  • No laptop/tablet sleeve: This is a bit of a let down for a premium bag however if you get creative the largest mesh compartment is quite big and enough to fit a medium-sized laptop/tablet. I wouldn’t recommend using it very often but it will get the job done.
  • Looks: Now this is purely subjective but if you’re into the hipster fad then you will find that this bag looks a little boring there are other options on the market that look great! However, if you’re more into functionality than looks then this is a much better choice. The looks are also a personal preference.

You are just entering the world of backpackers but wait you’re more into comfort than running around with your bag which is why you need something with wheels but only the best! From a company that designs some of the finest quality luggage in the world for independent travelers, it’s no surprise to anyone that the Osprey Sojourn 80L is our top pick for the best backpack in wheels 2019!

This hybrid beauty is an excellent rolled backpack with high functionality and a high rolling chassis. It is easily one of the best on the market and for an overall decent price!

Comfort: As we mentioned earlier it is important for this backpack to be a roller first and then a backpack. This is because of comfort. Most rolled backpacks are not comfortable which they need to be because they’re essentially going to be used as rucksacks.

We love the really well-designed suspension system. Osprey always makes it their mission to provide products that actually work. In this case, this suspension is immensely important for the sojourn to work as a rucksack It saves our backs, and you’ll feel especially grateful for owning a Sojourn.

Capacity: Being 80 L it is excellent for long-term travelers who still desire flexibility and versatility of backpacking. The Osprey Sojourn will quickly convert wholly from a wheeled bag to a regular rucksack with the straps easily stored and removed. Depending on what you need and when at the moment you can switch!

Interiors: The most important element is the compression and the sojourn has a super cool straightjacket compression which also has dual compression straps so you can hold 80L baggage without damaging or appearing bloated.

This travel backpack also has incredible organization and compression options like mesh pockets, some daisy chain attachments, extra tightening straps, and lots of clothing straps for hanging wet or dirty laundry.

External components: This is important for the versatility of the bag. If you are going to use it as a rucksack you need components like grab handles which it does have. The sojourn also has high road chassis for a smooth ride over any surface.

Lifetime guarantee: Osprey is one of the most reputable companies in the world and they make the best quality bags. However, this means nothing unless they offer a lifetime guarantee which they do!

This means they will fix any problems you also do not have to pay for shipping whilst sending it for defects; sweet deal huh?

Pros
  • Internal compression
  • Large capacity
  • Good price
Cons
  • Lifetime Guarantee
  • Bulky size
  • No Laptop sleeve

Reason to Buy: You’re in the market for a rolled backpack but you need something of ultimate quality that also looks hip and is not too big like most rolled backpacks! You also need something that is versatile, looks great and isn’t too big like other 70-80L rolled backpacks.

It is Engineered to minimize weight, the collection is designed to deliver the expected Osprey function and reliability, in a package that redefines luggage.

Osprey Sojourn 75L Dimensions:

  • dimensions in cm - 28H X 14W X 13D IN.
  • Weights - 6.93 LBS.
  • Volume - 3051 IN3 / 50 L

Highlighted features:

  • Fits on as carry-on most airlines
  • Osprey lifetime guarantee
  • Detachable day backpack

Drawbacks but not deal breakers:

  • Expensive: We find the price tag of $300 expensive compared to other Osprey options that are much cheaper in price. This is at the expense of a better look and slightly better design. We don’t think it’s worth the extra price tag but if you’re looking for something that looks good this is for you!
  • Less robust than the other models: You will find that the materials in this bag are not as strong as the others. This is because it is less dense to be more light and look good. It’s not weak but not as strong as others. If you’re not going to do something crazy whilst traveling then it should be good enough to protect your baggage

best backpack with wheels 2019 Osprey ozone convertibleThis is our runners-up only because of the higher price tag than the Osprey Sojourn 80L. The best part about this bag is although it can hold a whopping 75L it barely looks it! It’s quite small compared to most of its competitors and it looks amazing as well. Another great part about it being small is it fits on most airlines so you don’t have to pay extra for check-in!

Carry-on size for a 75L Roller bag: This Osprey product it’s a piece of wheeled luggage that is perfectly sized to meet the airline’s maximum carry-on size specifications.

Extra Detachable daypack: We also love the detachable daypack that allows you to just move around with something light once you reach your destination! All in all, If you’re looking for something with high functionality and great looks you cannot go wrong with the Osprey Ozone Convertible!

Lifetime guarantee: Osprey is one of the most reputable companies in the world and they make the best quality bags. However, this means nothing unless they offer a lifetime guarantee which they do!

Strong Material and fabric: All we have to say is this is definitely among the most versatile, rugged, and beautifully designed travel backpacks with wheels on it. Moreover, Osprey already is known for making uniquely designed travel backpacks with a whole plethora of great carrying options, and this is definitely among the best it has to offer. The bottom is made of 420HD Nylon Packcloth

Innovative Design: A groundbreaking original design by Osprey Packs, The High Road LT™ Chassis uses super lightweight aluminum tubing made for the frame and at the base of the Ozone Series. It has large wheels with sealed bearings and also a high clearance, curved, molded base that allows the wheels to roll over any rough terrain. Adding to that it is combined with a comfortable single bar handle. Osprey has created one of the lightest weight wheeled luggage chassis on the market.

Lightweight aluminum body: Ozone Convertible also boasts a very strong aluminum frame and an extended ergonomic handle that keeps shit aligned when it has to be and also ensure it is even over rough ground. Also being made of aluminum makes it less dense and thus lighter which can help a lot if you are planning to use this as a backpack.

Exteriors: The convertible is designed to be small and functional. It is made of durable materials but keeping in mind lightweight. Unlike other rolled bags that are more rigid in nature this one is less dense and made of aluminum this is to reduce the load on the back when used as a rucksack. There is also an adjustable hip belt to move the center of gravity closer to the body. A feature not seen in many other bags.

Exterior feature highlights:

  • 1 Easy access top zippered pocket for liquids and valuables
  • 2 Large zip panel access to the main compartment with lockable zippers
  • 4 HighRoad LTTM Chassis
  • 5 Low profile carry handles on top and side
  • Convertible suspension with the padded back panel, hip belt, and adjustable harness

Interiors: At first we thought the small size would have a trade-off for the organization but this cannot be further away from the fact that the organization is almost perfect. With large zip panels and easy access to main compartments with lockable zip, it’s quite easy to pack and remove baggage from this bag.

Interior feature highlights:

  • Dual internal compression straps
  • Full-length internal mesh side pocket
  • Full-length internal fabric side pocket
  • Large internal zippered mesh front panel pockets

Large Access Main Compartment: The large access main compartment utilizes a full front panel U-zip opening that allows quick complete access to gear. The stiff zipper path provides structure to keep the main compartment wide open while packing or unpacking gear. The bright internal liner makes it easy to find small items that could otherwise be hard to find in a large compartment. To help organize small items, it would be best to utilize the internal zippered pockets.

Top Liquids Pocket: There are top liquids pockets that are conveniently located at the top of the luggage piece. Easy zip access and location allow quick access to your toiletry kit or other small items—especially when passing through airport security. Its bellowed design allows it to compress, giving volume to the main compartment. When fully utilized, the Ozone Convertible is sized to fit a variety of 1L/1qt wash bags or our Airporter travel duffel and cover.

Unique Features:

  • Ventilated, mesh-covered, die-cut foam harness and back panel
  • Main compartment padded laptop sleeve and zippered tablet sleeve
  • Zippered, heat embossed, scratch-free pocket for glasses or electronics
  • Front panel organization pocket
  • Side stretch mesh pockets

Read Customer Reviews Here >>

Best Reason to Buy: You need something that has premium features especially for your tech but it isn’t too expensive. You’re looking for the best of the rolled bags but at an overall affordable price.

Featured Highlights:

  • 50L capacity
  • Very Durable 1000D Kodra nylon
  • A lot of compartments for electronic gadgets
  • A Built-in 4500mAh power bank for charging
  • A FastPass System for super quick TSA clearance

This is honestly a really good rolled backpack for its price especially for those who travel with a lot of tech. Some of its unique features can be very helpful if you need them.

The only reason this isn’t our top pick is that it doesn’t feature-rich in the essentials travel space it’s more tech-oriented which is kind of a downfall. However, for the price, you’re paying some of its features easily add a whole lot of value.

Drawbacks but not deal breakers:

  • Does not have a suspension system
  • Lacks storage for clothing and other non-tech essentials
Pros
  • Great price
  • Good features
Cons
  • No Suspension system
  • Lacks organization

At first, we were surprised to find Eagle Creek delivering such backpacks for travel and even so at such a low price. However, our suspicion was challenged but the premium features it has to offer at such a low price.

You’ll love the rolling backpack’s attention to detail given to the backpack portion of the backpack area. It just looks so aesthetic and hips no one will ever know it is among the cheapest!

Best Reason to Buy: You’re on a budget and you simply need something cheap but still care about some value in return. You aren’t into a whole lot of features but just need something that will do its job when you do go on trips.

Featured Highlights:

  • 78L capacity
  • zip-away suspension system
  • Quite Durable with scuff-resistant Bi-Tech™ Armor Lite fabric
  • A good suspension system
  • High security with Central Locking Point system and Secure-Zip systems
  • Great value for money

Drawbacks but not deal breakers:

  • Too big for a carry-on
  • Quality may be lacking compared to other options

  • Large capacity
Cons
  • Great quality
  • Not carry on size

5. Osprey Meridian 75L - Wheeled Backpack With Daypack

Now although there’s a huge company backing this product it didn’t make the cut because we felt like this isn’t a complete package for the price you are paying. We still think it’s a good choice but our top picks follow very strict filters to give you only the best recommendations.

The osprey meridian 75L isn’t bad by any means it just isn’t good enough to be among the top this isn’t in quality but in other factors like price and value rendered.

You also get a detachable daypack for your inter-day travels that can carry up to a 15” laptop, a tablet, and an emergency rain gear. It’s got a tough shell of 1680D ballistic nylon with a 3420D nylon oxford ascent to make the material more robust. The backpack can definitely take some serious bruising without giving up.

Top Features:

  • 75L capacity
  • Very durable 1680D ballistic nylon
  • A detachable daypack
  • Lightweight high-clearance chassis for excellent maneuverability

The only complaint we have with this one is the suspension system which is an important feature for out top picks. We found it incomplete and not offering the full functionality it deserves. Although the shoulder harness is well-designed there is no hip belt.

Since the key of the hip belt is to distribute weight evenly the meridian isn’t quite as comfortable as a rucksack as compared to the other Ospreys. For the price, this is not a lot of value you are getting in return which is why it didn’t make the top pick.

su_row]

Pros
  • Large capacity
  • Detachable Daypack
  • Laptop sleeve
Cons
  • Not great value
  • Not great suspension

Backpack With Wheels Buyers Guide: What is good about backpacks with wheels?

Like we discussed above-rolled backpacks are simply a combination of rucksacks and suitcases. What’s so great about this backpack is it gives you the flexibility of getting from point A to Point B. You can move whilst alternatively switching between carrying it on your back and gliding it on the ground.

If you’ve tried a suitcase because you can already imagine the comfort of having a sweet pair of wheels on your rucksack!best backpack with wheels 2019

So to the more important question should you ditch your backpack for a rolled backpack?

This is tricky to answer because there are many factors that matter but the short answer is YES!

Rucksacks are great for proper mountaineering and trip into the wilderness! But it sucks for traveling! Here a couple of reasons why:

  • They will kill your back: Having something heavy lugging around on your back will have some severe stipulations when you get older. It’s also quite awkward, uncomfortable and very rarely graceful.
  • Airports: Everyone traveling has to visit this one but we’re specifically talking about airport lineups because you either have to wear your pack the whole time you’re in a queue (which can seem like hours btw) or you have to keep kicking it along two feet at a time until you finally reach the boot. It’s super irritating and inconvenient!
  • Incompatible as daypacks: If you need something for your carry-on essentials and laptop then you need something smaller than a giant rucksack. You simply look like a dork otherwise it looks ridiculous and more importantly super uncomfortable!
  • Difficult to organize: As rucksacks can pack a lot but are relatively small the organization is terrible. You can almost never find what you are looking for.
  • Vulnerable straps and material: Unless you’re getting something really good you are at the risk of getting your straps ripped to shreds on every flight as conveyor belts that don’t play well together.

So to get the gist rucksacks are either too big for daypacks or too small for longer travel. They’re also very inconvenient to keep lugging around. On the other hand, rolled backpacks are a perfect balance of rucksack and suitcase. You have the convenience of rolling it on the ground when you have to and you also have the much better organization for baggage so that you can pack better and travel hassle-free and more importantly pain-free!

Do I really need a travel backpack with wheels?

OK so having a backpack with wheels isn’t cool. It isn’t something you need to brag about it’s also 2019 no one really cares about wheels on a backpack!

But let me tell you something people do care about and it’s the comfort of traveling hassle-free.

This is the strongest reason to get a rolled backpack because it’s a combination of two very different types of storage products a rucksack and a suitcase. This versatility gives you the option of traveling heavy without the need of having something lugging you down everywhere both your body and mind will take you greatly!

Sure space, style matters as well and this isn’t something you will see majorly in a rolled backpack, however, the most important factor is the comfort of getting from point A to point B in the most comfortable way possible.

Let’s also not forget that traveling isn’t easy cramped airplane seats, buses, trains long days walking on your feet which is more than enough stress for your mind and body to handle, add to that a heavy backpack?

With a good backpack with wheels, you’ll save your back a lot of pain and be able to move swiftly through the streets with very little hiccups! And that’s EXACTLY why you should get a rolled backpack; the comfort of traveling hassle and pain-free!!

Pros and Cons of Wheeled Backpacks for travel

Although we have a lot to say that is good about rolled backpacks there is nothing in this world that is perfect. Backpacks with wheels through a good innovation in travel backpacks on the market do have some flaws as well.best roller backpacks 2019

Remember we aren’t trying to sell you something but empower you with a good buyer’s mindset. This is why it is as important to know the drawbacks of something to know the whole picture! Even better we decided to create a pros and cons comparison table of backpacks with wheels to give you a better idea of what’s the best and worst in a backpack with wheels.

Do note that although these are drawbacks they are definitely not dealbreakers because they may actually be subjective to what we find as a drawback. We just want to give you an added perspective it is your wish to consider it or not.

Pros
  • Versatile
  • Good on your back
  • Convenient
Cons
  • Weight
  • Discomfort
  • Ease of use
  • Not great for hiking

Pros of Backpacks With Wheels

Versatile: This is an obvious advantage for this type of bag. The versatility of simply gliding it across when convenient gives travelers different carrying options. You can either use it as a suitcase or a backpack!

You back will thank you: This one is obvious! If you’ve been lugging around with heavy backpacks for a while you back will love that comfort you now have due to rolling something on the wheels.

Appearance: This may be subjective but we find these backpacks quite aesthetic especially with the wheels it adds to a futuristic look.

Convenient at airports & train stations – If you are traveling through busy airports or train stations the convenience of simply wheeling your bag along is simply great! This can be the opposite if it is too crowded with barely any space to walk! In this case scenario, you simply unzip the shoulder straps and put it on your back to get around quicker! You can alternate between your back and the ground for quick and hassle-free commute.

Cons of Backpacks With Wheels

Weight: The add-on wheels and extending handle will definitely have a trade-off on weight. Compared to rucksacks wheeled backpacks tend to be around 4 Kg or more in weight. If you don’t plan on carrying it for long periods of time then this is fine however if you are going to then you might want to reconsider.

Comfort: Since most wheeled backpacks are part suitcase there is a trade-off of comfort. Fixed back systems do not allow you to adjust to height and build so comfort is an issue. Then again you aren’t exactly going to carry it on your back for long so it doesn’t really matter too much.

Ease of use: Most of the rolled backpacks are easy to use however some do not come with an extending towing handle making it slightly awkward when you’re on the taller side of the homo sapiens height spectrum. If you buy one please make sure you look into this if you find yourself having to stoop down to reach and grab the handle then you need something with an extendable handle.

Not suitable for mountaineering: This only applies if you are going to be climbing a lot of mountains. Wheeled backpacks are obviously not a good option for trekking. This is simply because there is no adjustable back system and when you’re carrying a backpack for a few hours you really want to make sure you have that added comfort and support you get from adjustable wearing options.

How we chose our top backpacks with wheels

The reason we have this “how we choose our” section is that the goal of all these reviews is to help you choose the best product for you based on an informative choose. The keyword here is the best product for you and NOT the best product. This is because although some backpacks may have the best features they aren’t necessarily a good fit for you! You may argue that xyz blog has called it the best product but every product has its own use. They can never be the best product there can only be the right one.

This is why we have the “how we choose our” section which is more of a buyer’s guide to help you pick the best product for you.

I know wheels on a backpack may seem complex to some but it really isn’t any different from choosing a normal travel backpack! What you’re really looking for is a good well-balanced combination of a regular rucksack and a rolled suitcase!

What you need to remember is although this is a wheeled backpack it is really a rucksack with wheels so most of the features you would look for in a good travel backpack you will also look for in a roller backpack.

Some of the features we look for in a good rolling travel backpack are:

  • Guarantee: A lot of buyers neglect this only to regret it later. Moreover rolled backpacks will be very vulnerable towards calamities which is why we will always recommend going for a product with a warranty over another without. Traveling is unexpected which is why you should always be prepared for the worst.
Hint: Osprey offers a lifetime guarantee.
  • Fabrics: Wheeled backpacks, unlike rucksacks, are sturdier. They should use solid materials are some of them are replacements for your suitcase they may even be used at check-in. You’re looking for something robust and durable to handle rough environments.
  • Materials: Apart from fabric you’ll want to have something that can hold up well against the external environment there will always be a trade-off between quality of materials and weight so we recommend you look for bags with good light aluminum frames, a chassis with a high-quality mold and a robust wheel with strong bearings fit in place.
  • Size: Like other luggage, a rolled backpack also comes in many types of shapes and sizes. Depending on the duration of your trip you need to choose something that will be either sufficient for a long trip or not too much of an overkill for a short trip.
  • Comfort: This is often a huge concern as these rolled backpacks are quite sturdy and bulky in size. Unlike most rucksacks that are made of less dense materials to shed weight, these are more rigid in nature. However, keep in mind you’re getting something with wheels to avoid having to carry it on your back. It’ll most likely be on the ground most of the time. Some options do come with a day pack so look into those.

Extra features like compression straps can not only help to pack your bags tighter but also bring in the load close to the center of gravity for much more comfortable than normal. You will want to pay a lot of attention to the material used on the suspension system. Also, look for shoulder harness and hip belts with mesh ventilation so that you stay cool in warm or hot weather.

  • Suitability: As we discussed before there is no best product there is only the right one. This is also quite important as people travel for various reasons some for work, some for leisure others as a lifestyle like digital nomads, backpackers, etc. Based on what you need it for a rolled backpack can be a perfect or bad fit for you. This is easily one of the most important features so keep this in mind whilst looking for one.
  • Style: Now this isn’t really a huge concern you can call it one of your smallest concerns. However, it’s 2019 aesthetics matter which is why you don’t want your bag to look terrible especially because you’ll be carrying it along with you everywhere and the last thing you want is it catching attention for the wrong reasons.

We admit most of our top choices are certainly not the winners for fashion award but they are definitely not the ugliest either. They look relatively professional and reasonably sleek in design. If you need something that looks chicer than you might not need a wheeled backpack!
