Sleeping on the floor might be controversial, but it is a unique experience a lot of people would like to have. Not everyone likes sleeping on a conventional bed, and that’s where Japanese Futon mattresses come to save the day. There are plenty of Japanese Futon mattresses online, but not all of them share the same quality. Before buying a Futon mattress, you may want to know a few things, and it’s all collected here:
What are Japanese futons and shikibutons?
A futon is a type of bed laid on the floor for sleeping, while a shikibuton refers to the mattress itself. However, the word “futon” can sometimes refer to the mattress, and the terms “furon” and “shikibuton” are often used interchangeably in the context of the global market.
Futon mattresses can be folded and kept inside a cabinet when not in use. Before sleeping, they can easily be unfolded and your bed would be ready. Since these mattresses are easily foldable and highly portable, they are manufactured to be thin and lightweight.
Maintenance
Futons are often made of cotton and polyester fabric, and they are not meant to be washed. You need to use a cover with a Futon mattress to make sure it doesn’t get dirty. You may also want to occasionally put the mattress out in the sun so that any moisture present can get dried. Keeping the mattress dry and out of moisture is a golden rule for maintenance of Futon mattresses.
Tatami Mat
Tatami mats are often recommended to be used with Shikibutons. For better maintenance, you should put your Futon mattress (the Shikibuton) on a Tatami mat. Tatami mats are soft, and are often made of soft rush and hemp. These mats have a special moisture absorption property. Since Futon mattresses are highly sensitive to moisture and may get damaged, it’s a good practice to lay your futon bed on a Tatami mat.
Sizes
Mattresses come in different sizes, and those sizes have names like Twin, Full, etc. While these sizes have well-defined standard dimensions, Japanese Futon manufacturers often don’t follow that standard to name the size of their mattresses. For example, even though the definition of a “Twin” size mattress is standardized, Japanese manufacturers may make mattresses with slightly different dimensions but still label them “Twin.”
These are the standard dimensions for each size:
- Twin (75 inch x 38 inch)
- Twin XL (80 inch x 38 inch)
- Full (75 inch x 54 inch)
- Queen (80 inch x 60 inch)
- King (80 inch x 76 inch)
